Plant Description

Herb,cactus like succulent. Stems very short, suckering freely to form dense  rosette. Leaves sub-basal,erect,thick,fleshy,pale green, presence of pale dots/blotches (generally in very young plants), linear-lanceolate, 15-50 × 6-7 cm, margin sparsely spiny-dentate, teeth 1–1.5 cm apart; apex often reddish. Inflorescence  simple, erect, terminal,usually unbranched,60-90 cm; peduncle upto 2 cm thick; raceme upto 40  cm long, sometimes with 1 or 2 ascending branches, numerous flowered; bracts whitish, broadly lanceolate, ca. 10 × 5--6 mm, veins 5-7, apex acute. Flowers reflexed; pedicel ca. 1/2 as long as bract. Perianth yellow mottled with red, slightly ventricose, 2-2.5 cm, outer lobes free for ca. 1.8 cm, slightly recurved at apex. Stamens 6,slightly exserted by 4 mm;anthers 2–4 mm; style usually exserted;stigmas not expanded;fruits: loculicidal capsule.

Intended Use

Coughs, wounds, ulcers, gastritis, Diabetes, Cancer, headaches, arthritis, immune-system deficiencies, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, colitis, and colon-related problems. Insect bites, rashes, sores, herpes, urticaria, fungal infection, and vaginal infections, reduce psoriasis, reduce rosacea, reduce warts and reduce aging, reduce wrinkles, and also it reduces eczema.

Traditional Application

1-Aloe vera gel used as an emollient and moisturizer in commercially available products (makeup, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, incense, razors, shampoos, lotion) yogurt, beverages, and some desserts.

2-It maintains the pH inside the stomach and digestive tract. The juice extracted from leaves of aloe vera is found to be a good laxative.

3-Extracts  of  Aloe vera are used in the dilution of semen for the artificial fertilization of sheep.

4- A mouthwash Aloe vera mouthwash has been shown to reduce plaque inside the mouth. Aloe vera is used in sports injuries by reducing the inflammation of strained muscles. It speeds up cell production at injury spots.

5-Aloe vera is high in Vitamin C and selenium helps in controlling cancer and high blood pressure.

6-Aloe-vera help in preventing the formation of kidney stones.

7-Bhil tribe of India uses, the pulp of aloe-vera leaves mixed with wheat flour, to make the balls from the dough and roasted in dried cow dung, one ball per day taken with Pure Ghee is used to build strength.  (Ethnobotany of Bhil Tribe, V.P Singh, Dinesh Jadhav).

8- Seeds of Trigonella foenum -graecum soaked in aloe vera pulp overnight and apply directly on the hair for improving the quality of hair.

9-Dissolve latex in water and consume 15-20 ml of it to increase the appetite.

10-Mix latex and honey in equal parts and homogenize and give 10 ml orally to children to get rid of intestinal worms.

12- Leaf juice is useful in X-ray burns, dermatitis, skin disorders, boils, wounds, and burns.

13-In Tamilnadu, Fresh juice of Aloe vera is used as a cathartic and for cooling. It is also used in treating fever eye infections and ulcers.

15-Topical application of Aloe vera may be effective for genital herpes and psoriasis.

16- In the Saudi Arab area Aloe Vera is locally known as Al-Maguar and Sabar.
