Plant Description

Perennials, aromatic, herbaceous, erect rhizomatous herbs. Stems 5-50 cm tall. Stems pubescent upwards, glabrous below. Rhizome long, stout, outer layer covered with reddish-brown, fibrous remains of the petioles of dead leaves. Leaves are simple, opposite, rosette; Radical leaves spatulate or linear-oblanceolate 5-25 × 0.5-2.5 cm, glabrous or slightly pubescent, base attenuate, margin entire, apex obtuse; Cauline leaves elliptic to obovate mostly 1 -3 in pairs. Inflorescence capitula of cymes, 1.5-4 x 0.5-2 cm across, bracts in 3-5 whorls, involucral bracts 4-6, lanceolate; bracts ovate. Flowers many usually 1- 5; Calyx 5-lobed; lobes semiorbicular, pubescent. Corolla purple red, pink, white, campanulate,0.8cm long, 5-lobed. Stamens 4, filaments villous.Ovary 3- celled, ovule-1; stigma capitate. fruit-Achenes obovate, 3-4 mm, with white hairs crowned by calyx-lobes.

2- Nardostachys jatamansi root is used by traditional healers against poisonous and non-poisonous bites and stings. 3- Khongleng, Monpa tribe of West Kameng district and Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh use root to treat fever, dysentery, cold, influenza, chronic fever, and jaundice.  At several places in Arunachal Pradesh herb is practiced as a cardiac tonic.
