Plant Description

An erect, herbaceous or semi-woody shrub or small tree, up to 5 m tall, monoecious. Stems hollow, becoming woody at the base. Shoots glabrous, secreting clear fluid. Petioles 5-20 cm long; petiolar glands variously shaped near the petiole base. Alternate, star-shaped leaves, leaf-blades commonly 7-9-lobed, the median lobe is longest, approx. 10-20 cm long and 2-5.5 cm wide, lobes lanceolate, to ovate to elliptic, acutely acuminate, lateral nerves c. 10-20 pairs, dark glossy green above, paler beneath. Stipular sheath ovate, c. 1-2 cm long.  Inflorescence panicles of unisex flower ,10-25 cm long; bracts c. 1 cm long, the bracteoles smaller. Male flowers; pedicels c. 1 cm long; calyx-lobes elliptic-ovate,5-8 x 3-4 mm, acute, yellowish green; stamens many, clustered, free,4- 7 mm long, anthers dorsifixed,0.5 mm. long, pale to cream yellow, pollen pale yellow. Female flowers: pedicels 3-5 mm. long, sepals lanceolate, 5 mm long, acuminate, purplish; ovary superior, ovoid - trilobate-sub globose, 2 x 2.5 mm, covered with green to purplish –red projections (spines). Fruit capsule, trilobate, 1-1.8 x 1-1.5 cm, reddish- brown, Seed ovoid–spheroid, 9—22 mm long, shiny, brown.

Intended Use

Arthritis, backache, muscle aches, inflammation, toothache, gallstones pain, menstrual cramps, chronic backache and sciatica, chronic headache, constipation, expulsion of placenta, rheumatism, sleeplessness and insomnia.

Traditional Application

1) Seed oil is a very well-known laxative and is also known for its anti-dandruff effect.

2) Commonly known as Amanakku in Tamil Nadu the seed oil is used for cooling the body in fever (K Rajendran, P Balaji & M Jothi Basu,,Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge, Medicinal plants and their utilization by villagers in southern districts of Tamil Nadu Vol. 7(3), July 2008, pp. 417-420).

3) Massage hand-warmed castor oil over the lower abdomen to get relief from menstrual pain and cramping, menstrual irregularities, and uterine and ovarian cysts. 4) To treat rheumatoid arthritis take up to 20 ml of castor oil mixed with a pinch full of ginger with a cup of warm milk daily at bedtime to reduce inflammation and stiffness of the joints.                                                                                         

5) To treat sleeplessness and insomnia a little castor oil is rubbed over the eyelids before sleeping.

6) Massage light handly with castor oil over the swollen lymph nodes and there is a shrink in size.

7) Rukuba women of Plateau State in Nigeria use herb for contraception is an ancient practice, they chew 2-3 seeds for contraceptive coverage of one year (RT McNeil, A Adebesin and E Ekwere, Ricinus communis-linn (castor plant), Male contraceptives and reproductive health of women, African Journal of Reproductive Health August 2021; 25 (4):135, DOI: 10.29063/ajrh2021/v25i4.14).

8) In Jonai, Assam,leaf decoction with sugar is administered orally once a day and is used as an antimalarial agent.
