Shrub up to 4 m high, thick branches; stem with yellowish bark, glabrous. Petiole 2-4 cm; leaves 5-25 X 2-7 cm, simple, bright green-colored above and paler beneath, blade-elliptic-lanceolate-ovate, acuminate pubescent at young, glabrous when mature, base cuneate, entire margin, apex acuminate; side veins 9-13 on each side of the midvein. Flowers grouped in dense terminal spikes, spikes- 2-8 cm. long; peduncle 2-15cm. Bracts are ovate to elliptic,10-20X 5-12mm. towards the end of the branches. Calyx 5-lobed, oblong-lanceolate, less than 1.3 cm. long, glabrous or slightly pubescent; corolla 5-lobed, creamy-white, with a few irregular pinkish colored lines in the throat, 2.5-3 cm. long, pubescent outside; tube 1-2 cm. long, upper licurved, ovate-oblong,2-lobed; lower lip 3-lobed, oblong-round, middle lobe of lower lip largest, subcircular,9X5mm, lateral lobes 8X4.5mm. Filaments ca 1.5cm, long, stout, curved. The ovary is pubescent at the tip. Capsules 1.5-2X0.6-0.8 cm., obovoid, pubescent; solid stalk flattened, 1 cm. long. Seeds 5-6 mm. long, orbicular-oblong.

The leaves, flowers, fruits, and roots of the herb have been used in the indigenous system of medicine from a very early time. Medicinal details of plants are also described in the WHO manual "The Use of Traditional Medicine in Primary Health Care". Primarily, A. vasica has been most frequently used for treating colds, coughs, whooping cough, chronic bronchitis, and asthma. Different communities and countries worldwide use the herb for different ailments.
Leaves- In India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Thailand, Juice, decoction, infusion, powder, and cigarettes are used to cure cough, colds, asthma, bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, and tuberculosis.) Decoction, infusion, and poultice are used to reduce rheumatic pain and inflammatory swellings, by residents of India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.
Roots-Natives from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand use a different form of drug i.e powder, decoction, infusion, powder, paste, and cigarettes for the effective treatment of intestinal parasites, eye diseases, rheumatism, gonorrhoea, abdominal tumour, respiratory diseases, lungs infections, bronchitis, tuberculosis, cough, colds, asthma and act as an expectorant.

2) 3-4 teaspoonfuls of leaf juice thrice daily is advised for mucus loosening (Mohammed Rahmatullah, Anuj Kumar Das, Md. Ariful Haque Mollik, Rownak Jahan, Mujib Khan, Taufiq Rahman, Majeedul H. 3) Rolled dry leaves and smoked as a cigarette is used to treat wheezing.
4) In the Siddha medicine system-Adathodai kudineer and manappagu the two medicinal recipes are well known to cure asthma. Adhatoda kudineer is is a decoction of adathoda leaves in water and then cooling down the water for consumption.
5) Extract of the leaves performed antifungal activity against ringworm.
6) Leaf juice can be used to treat bloody stool and mucus in stool.
7) For treating cough, boil 7-8 leaves in water, strained, and mixed with 24-25 grams of honey, this decoction provides quick relief and draws out all cough from the lungs.
8) In the early stages of tuberculosis, the juice of herb, thrice a day orally helps a patient from incessant coughing.

10) Root and leaf decoction of A. vasica mixed with the extracts of Alangium salvifolium and Coccinia grandis were given orally as an antidote to snake bite. 11)To induce abortion, pregnant women in the Gora village of Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh, India) consume the leaves of J. adhatoda.
