Plant Description

Medium to large sized deciduous tree, up to 16 m high, bark  thin, greenish grey, reddish, ash colored, peels off in thin, papery flakes, exuding small drops of resin ; leaves large, deciduous, alternate, exstipulate, imparipinnate, 15-40 cm long, crowded more at the end of the branches, leaflets 8-15 pairs, variable in size and shape, 2.5-6.3 ×1.2× 30 cm, sessile to nearly sessile, ovate or ovate- lanceolate, crenate-serrate, variable sizes ;flowers in axillary racemesccor sub-terminal, fascicles at  the ends of the branches, pedicellate, bisexual, pentamerous; bracts caducous; calyx cup shaped, petals red -white, pinkish, 5, 0.5- 0.6 cm, oblong - ovate oblong, recurved, tomentose outer and sparingly pubescent at  inner side, ovary superior and trilocular, glabrous, stigma 5, capsule ovoid, ten stamens arranged in two whorls of five each, anthers dithecous and adnate ; fruit -a drupe  fruits are cotyledonous, trifed, 1.25 cm long, trigonous, splitting in to three valves. heart shaped seeds

Traditional Application

1) The exudates of herb in combination with sugar and honey is applied over eyes to treat conjunctivitis. to reduce joint pain 50-60 h powder of sallaki mixed with coconut oil and applied externally. 3) Flowers are used in fever and in cold. Fruits are useful in treating leucoderma,haemorrhoids. oleo gum resin is  arthiritis, CNS, skin infections, sores, cough.

4) To cure backache and other body pain, warm 100gm of crushed bark and placed it in a clean cloth and toed around the aching part. 7) 20 ml of decoction of the bark is consumed orally to get relief from stomach pain.In case of snake bite, 10 g mixture of pounded bark of the herb with root of Leea crispa L. (Leeaceae) in equal proportions, is taken twice orally within an hour as an antidote. 8) Bark powder is sprinkled externally on the wounds, 2-3 times a day. The application of the drug cures the wounds fast.Mixture of aqueous extract of stem bark and the root of "Maunapitri" (Cyperus compressus) in equal quantity along with 10 black pepper is given thrice a day for 3 days in snake bite.
